How LegalPaddle works
LegalPaddle answers one question fast: can I use this paddle in a tournament? We track two official lists.
Where the data comes from
- USA Pickleball (USAP) approved paddle list at equipment.usapickleball.org, plus its compliance report of paddles that are under investigation or removed. USAP approval is what sanctioned tournaments use.
- UPA-A certified paddle list at upaa.unitedpickleball.com, plus its de-listed paddles page. UPA-A approval is required for pro divisions at PPA and MLP events.
We pull both lists automatically once a day. Paddle specs, like core material and thickness, come from the official detail pages when they are published.
What the statuses mean
- Legal The paddle is on that official list right now.
- Under review It is on the list, but the governing body has posted a compliance investigation for it.
- Removed It used to be on the list and has been taken off, or the governing body reported it removed or de-listed.
- Not found under this name We cannot find this name on that list. It may not be approved there, or it may be listed under a different name. Each paddle page links to a search of the official list so you can check.
Matching the two lists
USAP and UPA-A often name the same paddle differently, for example with or without the thickness, a player name, or different capitalization. We link two entries only when we are confident: a name we checked by hand, the same name once case, punctuation, brand words and thickness are ignored, the same words in a different order, or the UPA-A model number appearing in the USAP name. We never link paddles with different thicknesses. When we only see a similar name, we show it as a hint and do not change the status.
How we avoid false alarms
Websites have hiccups. A paddle only counts as removed after it is missing from a full, successful check of the official list 3 days in a row. Partial or failed checks never count.
Please double check
We do our best to be accurate, but the official lists are the final word. Always confirm with USA Pickleball, UPA-A, or your tournament director before you play. Paddle names can be close, so match the brand, model, and (for UPA-A) the model number printed on your paddle.
LegalPaddle is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by USA Pickleball or the United Pickleball Association (UPA / UPA-A). Always confirm with the governing body before you play.
